What State Law Actually Says
No Virginia statute prohibits or licenses suppressor possession. Title 18.2 ch. 7 and Title 29.1 ch. 5 contain no such offense.
Four incidental references exist: § 18.2-287.4 (carrying a loaded semi-automatic rifle or pistol “designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer” in certain localities), § 18.2-308.2:2 (a threaded barrel capable of accepting a sound suppressor within the dealer-transaction “assault firearm” definition), and §§ 18.2-283.1 and 18.2-287.01, which bar mufflers and silencers in courthouses and Capitol Square.
Local Rules and Preemption
Virginia is the outlier on preemption. § 15.2-915(A) preempts local firearm regulation, but subsection (E), added in 2020, restored local authority to prohibit firearms in buildings used for governmental purposes, public parks, recreation and community centers, and permitted-event rights of way.
